Flees
Fleas are solely blood-sucking ectoparasites that parasitize warm-blooded animals. They belong to the Siphonaptera Order. They have no wings, and their body is laterally flattened, which allows them to move without difficulty between the fur of the animals they parasitize. The spines projected back on the surface of their body make it easy for them to move between fur or feathers and make it difficult to catch them. Their long and powerful legs allow them to jump vertically up to 20 cm, and 40 cm horizontally. Adults have a perforating and sucking mouthpiece. They undergo a complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa and adult). The female lays 300 to 400 eggs on the floor, carpets, beds, furniture, etc; under favourable conditions they hatch in 7 to 14 days. The larvae, like tiny worms, have a chewing mouthpart and feed on organic debris and excrement from adult fleas. Depending on environmental conditions and food availability, they pupate in a week, up to several months. Once its development is complete, the adult flea does not immediately emerge from its pupal shell; A few days, months and even a year may pass, which explains the presence of fleas in places that have been uninhabited for quite long periods.

Habits
An adult flea can fast for up to a year. In addition to the discomfort and irritation that they cause on the skin of the bitten individual, they can trigger complicated allergic conditions and even be intermediate hosts and vectors of parasites and infectious agents. The most important species are: Man Flea (Pulex irritans), Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis) and Dog Flea (Ctenocephalides canis), intermediate host of the Dipylidium caninum ethnic group.
Through their bite, they can transmit various diseases; the most dangerous that devastated mankind in past centuries, the Rat Flea (Xenopsylla cheopis), transmits the bubonic plague and murine typhus.
Prevention
Maintain permanent cleaning and grooming habits indoors and outdoors. Pet beds and utensils must be permanently washed and clean. Pets must be periodically checked and if they have fleas, they must be treated with specific antiparasitic products.
