Termites
Termites are social insects belonging to the Order Isoptera (two pairs of equal wings).
About 2,600 species have been described, of which about 150 cause considerable damage
to structures. Organized in colonies of thousands to millions of individuals, divided into castes:
adults (primary reproducers), workers, soldiers, and neo technical reproducers (secondary).
Primarily the queen lays about 10 eggs but, in some species, after a few years
it manages to produce up to a thousand eggs a day.

Habits
Termites are adapted to feed on wood, thanks to the fact that they host in their digestive tube
symbiotic microorganisms (protozoa), which produce enzymes that degrade cellulose, present in wood, cardboard, textiles, etc.
Without these organisms, termites die of starvation. To each caste a task is assigned within the colony. In this way, the workers collect the food and distribute it to all the castes that cannot feed themselves (trophalaxis).
The following species are of great economic importance, Drywood termites or Furniture termites (Cryptotermes brevis); Chilean termite (Noetermes chilensis); Moist wood termites (Porotermes quadricollis) and Subterranean termite (Reticulitermes flavipes).
The Furniture termite is the most destructive in the world. It is preferably located in urban centres near the coast since it requires a higher moisture content in the wood. It is very voracious and destructive and measuring 10 to 12mm. Its flying time (swarm) is between the first and second half of December in twilight flight.
Prevention
To establish a correct control strategy, it is important to identify the species. In order to do that you can use different technologies: Acoustic Emissions, Gas Detector, Infrared, just to mention a few.
