Wasps
Wasps belong to the Order Hymenoptera, Family Vespidae. Their nests are made up of individual cells in which the queen lays an egg. The larvae develop in these cells and are completely dependent on the workers or adults who provide them with food.
In an initial stage, it is the queen who provides the food but later, when some workers have developed, they are the ones in charge of feeding and protecting the colony and of taking care of its health as well.
The queen is the largest and the only fertile female. The male has a short life and is only reproductive. Within the colony the largest group is made up of the workers. The larvae feed mainly on arthropods, meat, nectar, honeydew, and fruits, while the workers feed on nectar, honey aphid secretion and insect fluids.
The complete cycle (egg, larva, pupa and adult) lasts approximately between 30 to 40 days, depending on the species. The size of the colony can be composed of only a few hundred to several thousand individuals.

Habits
In temperate climates, colonies die at the beginning of each winter, and new colonies are founded each year, as only young, fertilized queens survive the winter hidden in protected sites, such as tree bark. They build their nests out of a paper-like material, which is a mixture of wood fibres and saliva. The wasps that cause the greatest discomfort and / or damage both in urban, agricultural, recreational and forestry areas are: Yellow Jacket (Vespula germanica), followed by the so-called Trash Cans (Polistes dominulus) and the Paper Wasp (Polistes buyssoni). More recently, a new species of the Generom Polybia, the Small Black Wasp, has been added.
Prevention
We recommend reducing exposed food sources and destroying nests. Their capture is made by using traps, always under the supervision of an expert in this matter.
